Normally we shade color in cell by using fill color tool. If your cells are filled with numbers, you can distinguish the numbers and the number range by shading different color in each cell. But it is hard work to do them one by one if you have more cells to do. The Conditional Formatting is one of the Excel’s tools in order to help you adding color vary with the numbers you input. Let you follow the example below and get ”how to use the Conditional Formatting tool?”.
- Open Excel file and enter the numbers like the picture below.

- Drag mouse to cover the cells you want to shade color in order to differentiate the numbers.

- In Excel menu bar. Click Format > Conditional Formatting.
- In Conditional Formatting window select “Cell Value Is” .
- Select “equal to”.
- Input the number that you want to set the condition. For this example I input 5, please see the picture below.

- Click the “Format …” button.
- Click the Patterns tab and select the color you want the cells to display.
- Click Ok and Ok.
- Now you can see the cells filled with 5 are changed to the color you selected.

- In steps 5 you can change “equal to” to the others which the Microsoft Excel provides you the options “between”, “not between”, “equal to”, “not equal to”, “greater than”, “less than”, “greater than or equal to” and “less than or equal to”.
