Routing

Routing is a relay system by which packets are forwarded from one device to another. Each device in the network as well as the network itself has a logical address so it can be identified and reached individually or as part of a larger group of devices. For a router to act as an effective relay device, it must be able to understand the logical topology of the network and to communicate with its neighboring devices.

If you are like a lot of people, you probably know how to use the Internet but you don’t really know how it works. You probably have read or heard of Ethernet, but you don’t know what it is. So, do you know the use of the Ethernet? If you are not familiar with it, you will likely say, “No, I do not know its use.” Don’t be too sure however because if you have ever used a computer that is networked then you have used it.

Understanding the use of the Ethernet

It is actually composed of two things - a cable that connects computers and the language that the computers use in order to connect. Basically, the whole setup acts a glue to connect local area networks. The whole system works by assigning individual addresses to the computers and other hardware attached to them. The setup enables the computers and the hardware to communicate with one another.

Behind all the names on the urls of Internet websites are a series of numbers called IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and constitute the primary network layer for use on the Web.

The 127.0.0.1 IP

This particular IP address, also called a local host, is the basis for which loopback network connections are processed. Loopback means going back, and that is what 127.0.0.1 does, because it is the address of your machine. Using telnet, ftp, or try in any way to get to 127.0.0.1, you will be transported back to the host machine, yours. However, it is only the initial three numbers (127) that are needed; use any number combination with 127 and the result will be the same.

A frequent joke among programmers is to get the greenhorn to connect to this IP address. However, in reality the IP address has serious functions.
